The Great Liberation War (1971) The role of the freedom fighters (Muktibahini) in the glorious Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 was unique and exemplary. They sacrificed their lives to break the shackles of subjugation and establish an independent nation. The core roles of the freedom fighters during the Liberation War are detailed below: 1. Armed Resistance and Frontline Warfare • Initial Resistance: Following the dark night of 25th March, Bengali members of the military and paramilitary forces initiated the first armed resistance. • Guerrilla Warfare: Alongside the regular forces, ordinary citizens launched sudden guerrilla attacks on the enemy under the 'Crack Platoon' or various regional forces. • Frontline Battles: Despite limited supplies, the freedom fighters fought valiantly in numerous frontline battles against the heavily armed Pakistani occupation forces. 2. Diversity of Participants • Professionals and Students: University students and the youth served as the driving force of the war. • Farmers and the Working Class: The vast majority of the Muktibahini members were children of rural, working-class, and farming families. • Contribution of Women: Women fought directly with weapons, managed camps, gathered intelligence, and nursed the wounded. 3. Strategic and Psychological Victories • Naval Commando Operations: Through 'Operation Jackpot', naval commandos destroyed Pakistani waterways and ports, disrupting the enemy's supply lines. • Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra: Songs and poems broadcast by cultural warriors kept the morale of the freedom fighters high and inspired the public. • International Public Opinion: Expatriate Bengalis worked tirelessly abroad to gather international support for the cause of Bangladesh. 4. Ultimate Sacrifice • Supreme Sacrifice: The country achieved independence at the cost of three million martyrs and the heroism of decorated fighters (such as the Bir Sreshtho and Bir Uttom recipients). • Loss of Lives and Property: To secure freedom, the fighters risked their families, homes, and personal safety to plunge into the war.
